Our journey begins at the picturesque Limpiopungo Lagoon, sitting at about 3,900 meters above sea level. During a roughly one-hour walk around the lake, you may spot various waterbirds in their natural habitat. On a clear day, the snow-capped Cotopaxi and the dormant Rumiñahui volcano (4,712 m) unfold before your eyes in breathtaking panorama.
What we like about the picnic with volcano view is the silent power of the mountains – here you feel small and alive, surrounded by majestic nature. Afterwards, we drive further up to the parking lot at around 4,500 meters. From there, a slow and steady hike leads you to the mountain hut at 4,800 meters. Once there, take a deep breath and let the vast Andean landscape sink in. Weather permitting, you’ll enjoy a light snack at the hut or a picnic outdoors if the spot along the way was perfect.
