Informationen über Vina Concha y Yoro

Without a doubt, Casillero del Diablo has made Concha y Toro famous worldwide. But it’s not just the wine and its renowned quality that have captivated many consumers. So is its powerful and attractive legend, which makes of this brand already a tradition in wine industry. Below you will find out a little more about this famous Casillero del Diablo.

According to the legend, Don Melchor Concha y Toro – advised by the leading French experts of the time – started in 1883 producing high quality wines, which he kept in his personal cellar. Soon the excellence of the wines produced became famous, and some tenants started to stealthily enter his personal wine cellar to steal his collection. Ingeniously, Melchor Concha y Toro spread the rumor that the Devil appeared on the winery among the workers in the vineyard. Though this myth, he managed to salvage his best wines, and incidentally served to bring to life some of most powerful legends in global industry.

The legendary cellar has a single door and several vents, through where strangers used to sneak. From there to the floor there is a distance of 45 feet.

The building has withstood without damage over time. Past earthquakes have not opened a single crack in the cellar, due to its construction of “Cal y Canto”, typical in Chile in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. To join the bricks, it was used a mixture of lime, sand and egg and also some blood, as rumors said. This technique combines ingredients to bond the bricks in order to generate a larger structure with huge interior arches.

In this location, the temperature hardly varies. Temperature is 57 °F in the winter and 60°F in the summer, without using air conditioning equipment. The soil is made of gravel and it gets watered every week to preserve high humidity conditions, which varies from 70% to 100%.
